first you should be getting at least 550km before the light goes on and at least 600-670 km before you reach the 55-57 liter mark (about 8-9 liters to go to empty) or at least I do .
second your warning light which goes on typically at 550 mark or so can be accessed by removing the knee bolster - but before doing so check that its not the sender thats faulty by connecting two of the three wires at the sender unit at the tank with the ignition on - forget which colors but one will be ground.
third -check that your sender pegs all the way to to the top by connecting its wire with ground at the tank - sometimes they get out of whack due to certain types of fuel, additives or a stuck float
