How to *best* test an APC / FPR upgrade?

Just slapped in a modified APC box and 3.0 FPR from a local Saab buddy of mine. The car is driving fine, but NOT boosting any higher than before -- just between the yellow and red. It then dawned on me that I'm currently running 87 octane fuel, so I guess I should run this tank down, fill up with 92 octane, and then see higher boost.
Does that sound about right? Is it safe to assume that the new APC/FPR setup won't boost any higher with 87 octane? How else can I test that the new setup is pulling harder (aside from "seat of the pants")?
Thanks.
Yip
