Remember, the newest OG900 is now 16 years old (assuming a '94 convertable). So are you looking for a daily driver, or a toy?
I'd stick with a turbo and a manual. Non-turbos are OK, but the newer 2.1 liter engine wasn't great. And the car is so much more fun with a turbo. The automatic is a three-speed, which is buzzy on the highway. And an automatic non-turbo is a bit slow.
Passive belts showed up in '89, along with ABS. I'm not sure when the passive (automatic) belts were phased out, but not much after.
For just plain fun, I like a '86-88 turbo. No ABS, but then a much simpler and cheaper to fix brake system. The '86 had the oil-cooled turbo, and '87-88 had the water cooled. I had an '86 and had no problems with just the oil cooled turbo. I like the '86 bumpers a little better. So the water or oil cooling isn't a big thing for me. However, we are talking a 20 year old car; but if it's a toy, no problem.
Otherwise, a '92 or '93 turbo (sedan) or '92-94 turbo convertable. The last model years ('93 for sedan, '94 for convertable) have the most goodies - airbags, ABS, etc., but also have more to go wrong.
So - what do you want the car to do?
