My last mix of 2 qts M1 TDT 5W-40 & 1 qt M1 EP 15W-50 gave me effortless sub-zero shifting thru several winters, but recent 5th gear sticking after extended freeway driving meant it was time for another tranny oil change. The gearbox now has almost 249k mi on it, which means my last oil change survived for a full 30k mi. Things are going well with this experiment, as my tranny oil change intervals have been increasing from the 6k-8k mi intervals I was doing when I had the worst of my 5th gear shifting problems (more than 8 yrs & 100k mi ago) & shifting has actually improved.
Going back thru the repair history of the car shows early (1995, 50k mi) 5th gear shifting problems, mechanic notes of dirty oil, & tranny oil changes as frequent as every 12k mi. I guess that means I feel pretty good that my gear box has lasted this long!
Looking thru my odd collection of oils, I've decided to stray (again) from conventional recommendations & previous experience. This time the gears are getting (drum roll, please...) Slick 50. That's right: purebred snake oil. I figger, "what the heck?" I've got three bottles of the stuff & I'm never going to use it in any engine again, so let's see what it does when shredded by gears.
I shake it up real good, for about two minutes straight. When I pour it into the funnel, it looks like slow motion tap beer. One qt of Slick 50 gets mixed with one qt of M1 TDT 5W-40, & the balance is filled with M1 10W-30 ('cuz I've got just enough & I want to get it off the shelf; also, it's reputed to be very shear resistant). So far, it's shifting great. But it's only been 5 weeks & 1k mi.
The biggest question in my mind is, "what's it going to do when it gets below 0°F?" Guess I'll find out soon enough, eh?
