From what I learned in the year I've owned my 94 vert:
!. If you do the work yourself - get the best chassis, rust free as possible, in other words, the best you can afford. Let someone else pay for as long as possible. WHat I found was a car the previous owner put 14k into in the past 5 years. He finally got fed up when the 2 year old autobox started slipping. I got it for $1,000. It still needed work, but I have a good base.
The other option , if not doing the work yourself, is buy a completely restored car. You often see them for $5 - $15 thousand bucks. In other words, you get a discount cause the other guy loved his car. You get the value of that love, since few would be willing to pay for someone elses love. Have it looked over by an expert, and demand service records, build records, pictures, ect.
I often see cars being sold for lots less than what it cost to build. The enjoyment of the previous owned sort of recompenses him for the work put in. I know,,, it's not fair,,, at least not to the previous owner!
