I had solved a similar problem on a local saaber's '89 900S. She described the problem the same way, An intermittent bucking/stall and general hesitation under load but the idle and starting way ok. I was a bit too busy to test drive it and she was in a hurry that day and she didn't have time to drop the car off. On a hunch I suspected a clogged fuel filter and she admitted it probably hadn't been changed in a long while. I had her come back later when i had the new filter.
She called the next day and said it was still doing it so she wanted to drop it off for the day. Upon further inspection i found that one of the spark plug wires had a pin-hole sized burn threw it and was arching spark onto the engine causing a misfire on one cylinder.
New set of wires did the trick and put on a new distributor cap and rotor while we were at it.
Also. A clogged fuel injector might do this, but would probably cause more problems at idle.
