no mention that you removed the input shaft. did you?
the input shaft is behind the cover on the front of the transmission. held in place by a spring-clip. there should be a plastic propeller looking thing screwed in to the end of the shaft. remove that (but don't forget to put it back in! it actually helps to lubricate the drive chain) and screw a bolt in about half way so that you can pry the shaft out.
other than that the clutch plates and slave are just packed in there kinda tight. some times takes a few different approaches to get it all out at once.
