Project Status: Heater Control Valve Posted by Andy of Vermont [Email] (#702) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Andy of Vermont) on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 03:49:49 In Reply to: Aftermarket Heater Control Valve, Andy of Vermont [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 22 Feb 2010 02:01:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I decided to remove the dash facia. All the archives are saying it is not necessary, but I did it anyway for two reasons. One is that this job is sounding like a nightmare and anything I can do to make the actual removal and especially installation of the valve easier, I want to do. This car is my only transportation so the more work I can do without disabling the car (I've put the switches back so I can drive it sans facia for now) to make the downtime shorter or less risky is good. If anything goes wrong during the downtime part of the project, I'm going to be renting a car. I also want to see if I can fix the intermittent instrument panel lights while I'm in the dash, which requires facia removal. Plus, I was just curious how it all comes apart and what things look like in there.
However, I think I'm going to do what some have done and remove the entire heater core to increase my chances of success.
I still haven't fully decided what I'm going to do about the valve itself. I'm interested in keeping this car for many years as a daily year-round driver, and so I want to come up with a long term solution. It does not sound like the Scan-Tech valve is a long-term solution, nor is simply taking an old valve from a junkyard and installing it. In fact, I want to not only come up with a long term solution for myself, but one that will work for other like-minded long-term C900 owners.
I am most intrigued by the suggestion of rebuilding the old valve. Again, to avoid downtime of my own car, I'll probably pull a valve and heater core from a parts car (either buy a car, or pull from a junkyard) and attempt to rebuild the valve, maybe try to test it somehow, and then install it in my car.
I might need a little help on the rebuild from someone who has done it! First of all, where do you get the o-rings/ seals to do it?
Thanks everyone for your help! This community is really making this a fun problem to try to solve.
