I had a similar problem. The fan would blow the fuse (20 or 30 amp?).
Upon dis-assembly, discovered that graphite dust from the brushes had built up enough to cause a short between the brush holders.
The bearings were very dry (sintered bronze), oil generously and wipe up excess.
If the Fan is held onto the shaft with a spring clip, dis-assembly will be a snap. If fastened with a nut, it may be impossible, because the nut might have rusted firmly to the shaft. Penetrant, heat and an impact wrench may save the day.
When done, the fan spun freely and the electric load returned to 7 amps.
Definitely worth the effort.
