Use some air pressure to blast around the area from above. Perhaps it is on a cast ledge just below the crankshaft mating face that it could have hung up on. Just below is the rectangular hole that is a drain. Put a magnet up through that hole to catch the rascal. Use a probe to extend the pressurized air down from above.
I have a picture of the face of that area if you want to email me, I'll send it back to you.
