Unless the system has been converted at some point, the system is r-12, so it's not something you can check yourself. If it's been converted to r-134a, there should be a sticker in the engine bay somewhere stating that.
If it hasn't been converted, it would be my recommendation to do that. You still have to get the system evacuated by a professional so that the r-12 (if there is any left) is captured. There is instructions on the Townsend SAAB site to do the conversion. If you are handy, it's a DIY job. You have to get a new receiver/dryer, possibly new lines that connect to the receiver/drier if the old ones break when removing (common), a few o-rings and new compressor fittings. You can buy conversion kits at eeuroparts I think. You'll have to flush out the system with mineral spirits to get all the old ester oil out of the system as R-12 is not compatible with r-134a. I did mine a couple years ago and it's cooling fine.
If your system has been converted already, you may just need a recharge.
