Hi James,
I just went through the same thing a few months ago. I thought I would take the headliner out and do the job myself. Big mistake. The sun roof had been leaking due to clogged drains and once I had all of the support out from the edges, the headliner fell apart in 5 different pieces on my head as I took it out.
I brought the broken headliner and the car to an auto interior shop and they used a paper mache' product to put it back together. It now looks like new and I know I never could have done that kind of work. Cost $400.
