Stymied on this one.
My '92 900 Turbo generally works/runs/feels just fine, but has developed a steering "pop" that is very intermittent. An O-ring was replaced in the high pressure line between the steering pump and rack last week, but it seems like this may have occurred before that. Hard to tell.
Anyhow, I drove to work last Thursday -- about 15 miles -- and all was fine. Left for home in the afternoon on a 70-ish degree day, and within 10 miles or so I could "feel" and hear a popping sound. At a stop, I would turn the steering wheel back and forth a few degrees and easily get a "pop, pop" sound. It also seemed to pop slightly while driving -- even in a straight line -- which kinda creeped me out. I called my mechanic to drop if off the next morning. Of course, by the morning it was totally fine again -- no popping or anything strange. Not a thing. He looked it over, but couldn't find any issues. Also, the power steering fluid levels are steady, with no apparent leaks at all.
A few brief trips over the weekend, and it was fine.
Yesterday, however, the same thing happened: fine going into work, fine leaving work, and then starts to "pop, pop" within a few miles of home. I got home, ate some dinner, left within 15 minutes, but it was still popping. Met a friend a Starbucks for about a half-hour, and left with the steering still popping. Let the car sit for nearly two hours that evening, came out again (around 9PM) and the popping was totally gone. It was also fine on my way into work again today.
Any ideas on this whatsoever? It seems to be "heat related" somehow, but I can't figure out what's going on. I fully expect that it'll come back again this afternoon when I head home. Argh!!!
Looking for any advice / ideas....
Thanks,
Yip
