I finally got a chance to look at this closer. I've removed the shifter assembly and the plastic housing. Then I made a tool out of a socket (like shown on this board somewhere) and removed the ignition/shifter unit thingy *smile* So now the rod is free and clear. Question: Should I be able to move this at all with engine running and clutch in? If I do let the clutch out it just stalls. there is resistance somewhere but the car does not try to go forward or back. By the way, the rubber gasket was fine. One thing I did notice was this... there is a hole in the rod which looks like it should line up with a hole in the starter housing but there was nothing through it, connecting them... should there be? Where do I go from here? Im a complete amateur so this is quite an adventure so far! : )
