Dude... I'm having some top woes myself (on my '87)...
Here are my recommendations (and things I've done recently to mine)
1. Check the "ROOF" switch. easy to remove, open, clean contacts and inspect. Especially if you're having problems with the roof only in one direction.
2. You mentioned "e-brake switch good, fluid good, manual bypass good, fuses good." Just remember that there is a fuse in the main fuse box on the driver's fender, then an in-line style fuse on the passenger's fenderwell. The one on the passenger side has a habit of corroding and allowing intermittent Gremlins into the system. Clean/replace this with a new holder & fuse.
3. Relays: the two relays under the back seat are identical. 2nd rule of troubleshooting: swap the wires to the relays. if the problem reverses itself, then you can bet the relay itself is bad. These relays can be removed from the car and (gently) opened to reveal the inerts. Fine emory cloth can be used to shine clean the inner contacts...just be careful of the tiny wire between the contactor and the resistor. Good news is these relays are still readily available from a number of the SAAB parts suppliers.
4. PUMP: on the pump itself, I was "instructed" to just use a thin motor oil (like 5W-30), but researching the Hydro-E-Lectric website (Punta Gorda FL), they talk of using AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID in their replacement ones. they offer a 5 year guarantee when ATF is used while only a 3 year guarantee when brake fluid is used.
***NOTE: I'm "looking" for a way to "suction" out all the remaining fluid in my cylinders thru the pump.. anyone have any suggestions, without removing the cylinders completely?????? Thanks ***
This is the next step in checking my top problem... remove all the old motor oil, and replace with ATF, to see if my top will start working again.
Hope this helps! HooYah!
R/ Mike
