Frank,
There is a source for reconditioned inner drivers which are just beautiful and cost around $100.00 ($25.00 core so don't toss the old one). There sure seems to be a lot of very poorly rebuilt axles out there so I do everything possible to salvage my old ones. CVs will knock if they get dirt inside from a torn boot so sometimes just cleaning and repacking them with a new boot saves the day. Never run with a torn boot, inner or outer, CVs and inner driver/tripods will run almost forever if they run only in good clean grease. Years ago some automotive magazine guys did a test where they ran CVs open with no grease at all, and no boots! they found that after many, many miles the CVs were in perfect condition. A torn boot allows crap in and the grease traps it against the moving parts and then it's all downhill.
