Wire from temp sender to (dash) temp gauge

So, after some wacky electrical issues (partially my fault), the lone residual issue that I can see is with my temp gauge -- it reads above HIGH most of the time, even after just turning the car on. I thought I'd fixed it, but evidently not.
There is likely a short somewhere, I guess, but I'm trying to quickly test whether or not the gauge and/or sender are at fault here. A couple of questions:
1) Is it easy(ish) to get to the back of the temp gauge from the driver-side dash speaker?
2) It looks like the temp gauge side of my dash is dark (blown bulb). Could that be related?
3) As a test, can I run a single wire straight from the temp sender (near distributor) to the temp gauge to see if it functions properly? Anyone know how those items route to each other?
Otherwise, the temp on my car really seems to be fine -- it's just a gauge issue. Pain in the rear, though, and of all the gauges, it's one I'd like to have working properly, if possible.
Thanks for your help.
