High idle: I'm thinking there should be a switch on the throttle housing that is used to raise the idle once you put the trans in gear. That may have been moved elsewhere with LH 2.4, I'm not certain right now. Do your reversing lights work normally? If not, it could be a problem at the selector switch by the gearshift.
Vibration is likely old, worn motor mounts. Right side and/or front, most likely. My mom's 1990 900S is like this. Her car is very low miles, but it takes a conscious effort on the brake pedal to keep the car from creeping when in gear. Lots of low-end torque!
As for your upshifts, how are you driving it? Upshifts will be delayed if you are driving "spiritedly", with the boost up. If you're just driving with low or no boost, then it could be indicative of a problem.
In any case, I'd start with a fluid flush. Drain & refill, repeat 3 times, or until you've gone through 12 quarts of ATF. Don't forget, type "F" fluid only!
