1983 C900 brake noises can be fixed Posted by Jon [Email] (#11) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Jon) on Sun, 5 Dec 2010 14:58:14 In Reply to: 1983 C900 brake woes, john, Sun, 5 Dec 2010 12:39:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
John, the link to Townsend Imports describes one way to correct the problem.
I have used a mig welder to add some material in the 'groove' that is worn in the caliper and then ground it down with an angle grinder to bring it back to spec, with success. I have not been able to find good rebuilt calipers that have this groove still in specifications.
The brake 'clunk' is the caliper moving because of the wear. When you go forward and brake the caliper moves in one direction and pretty much stays there. When you brake in reverse the caliper moves in the other direction and 'clunks' when it stops.
The squeal can be minimized / stopped by applying either Gunk Spray Disk Brake Quiet or VersaChem Synthetic Caliper Grease & Brake Quiet to the back side of the brake pads on installation. Those are just the brands that I have on hand, you can use anything similar.
Good luck,
Jon
