Yep, this is all true save the larger knee bolster - you don't need it (but if safety is the goal you should have it). The computer bolts to a bracket which is bolted to the dash crossmember behind the speedo. It's held on with security torx bits and a little bit of a pain to remove, but definitely doable.
The SRS and ABS systems are virtually entirely self-contained, so moving the SRS system from old to new wouldn't be that rough. Wiring would only require a couple connections to the car's 12v system and rigging the light in the instrument cluster.
Biggest issue you'll run into is moving the sensors from up front, since they reside in little pockets cut out from the front inner fenders. You'd have to replicate that, and quite frankly those sensors are configured in a certain way that if they're not mounted right, they wouldn't work properly.
ABS system is about the same - you could move that entire system into an '81 if you wanted.
