Headgasket or cracked head?

Saabers,
Last week, in the frigid weather, I ran out of coolant, so filled with water, to get to work which has an indoor garage. You know the rest of the story- the coolant must have ran out, or the water froze_ yet the car began overheating, as I HAD to get to work- so I limped it two blocks more.
Well, the reservoir was dry!
After I finished work, the car started normally- and even ran fine. I decided to check the oil, and yes_ water in the oil!
When I open the expansion tank, I can smell oil.
Here is the question, can it simply be a blown gasket, or a cracked head.
Is there any way to tell if the head is crack, less bringing it to the rip off machine shops_ who more than likely will say "yes, the head is crack".
Is there an area that typically crack when the car overheats?, and where should I look to be sure...
Secondly, what is the best way to remove the water out of the oil? Water in the oil system-whoah! I'm thinking of the possible damage: yet the car starts and runs fine!
Yet the exhaust appears steamy. Thanks for any help
