As you already heard, it is becoming more and more difficult to both find rebuilt units or rebuild the one in your car due to hard parts not available and shops running out of good used parts.
That connected to that price is also of importance makes many shops hesitant to if they should even tackle the job.
Back in the days (10-15 years ago) when we did these transmission rebuilds all the time and had plenty of good used parts, it still ended up costing around $2500.00 with a lower hourly rate back then.
Last time I installed a factory rebuilt automatic transmission (8 years ago) it came up to $3300.0 with some extra stuff that always is needed when you have the power plant out.
So that's where the answer lies in that shops are not jumping all over the idea of trying to rescue the car back to life.
If it is in really good condition and the customer is willing to spend some money, then yes, it can be done.
And if you have someone that can do it on the side for a buddy price, a shop cannot even come close to that.
