When you say the key slot was ruined, do you mean utterly destroyed or just damaged? If it's just banged up, even to the point of being unusable, you're probably fine. The engine will not be damaged just from being many degrees off - read all the posts on here about people who have misassembled valve gear following a head gasket replacement! :) Did the engine just die or was it mechanically stopped?
If your head is holding air pressure in each cylinder, that seems to indicate there are no serious problems. Pop a new cam gear on there and find out. :)
