Some may recall that I spent much of last August building the FrankenSaab (young-- ~90k mi-- motor from a '93 mated to old-- 386k mi-- 5 spd from my '88, all bolted into the nearly rust-free chassis from a '93-- 220k mi-- all NA models, FWIW. The good news is that I've added ~16k mi to the odo since then without incident. The bad news is that may be changing.
I've been hearing recently a whine that I can only surmise is from the pinion bearing(s) in my (now) 400k+ transmission-- kinda high-pitched, coming from the right place, evident under load when in 4th and worst in 5th. I did a rather expensive little experiment over the weekend, changing to Redline MTL in hopes of quieting things down. It may have worked a bit in that regard and I guess it shifts a little better now, though it's never had any problems in the latter regard.
My request for input is to get a sense of what else might possibly be done to prolong it's life and, if failing at that, what lies ahead. As to what might be done, I'll note that I am not confident that I got the shims right on the passenger side inner driver during the swap. I had replaced the PS inner driver on the autobox of the young '93 just ~5k mi before it failed and I figured I would salvage the 'new' driver while I had everything out. I tried to keep the shims mated with the driver (i.e., shims and ID from the '93 were transplanted as a unit, but I'll admit that the logic of doing so-- as opposed to reusing the shims from the '88-- isn't apparent to me. The bottom line is that I'm entertaining the hopeful possibility that a Saab shop may be able to check and adjust the backlash in the differential to relieve strain on the pinion bearing. I'll note that the whine was not at all evident before transplant or immediately afterwords, it's only been in the last 1k mi or so that I've become aware and concerned about it.
Second, what is the typical failure scenario? I've read SCARY posts elsewhere of disintegration and immediate lockup of tranny, which would definitely suck, not just for being stranded, but especially if resulting in death or dismemberment as the scenario suggests. The whine isn't at all something I'm proud of, but if it's usually seen as a chronic rather than acute and imminent problem I'll drive on and explore other options.
Sorry this is long and TIA for any helpful tips; and BTW, I HAVE searched the board, but the PG is mentioned in so many other contexts that I figured it was worth the 10 minutes to write this query than 10 more hrs sifting through posts.
