If they are the right struts, they will be just strong enough to hold the hatch up. If too powerful, that could be the issue.
I work a lot with these struts on hatches on yachts. If you need only 15 lbs per side and you have 40 lbs per side then you have a problem.
If you still have your old ones see if they have the pressure rating stamped on them. You could try removing one thus taking half of the lift away and see what happens, though iif it was designed for 2 then it will need 2.
Also, if they are too long they will still have a lot of lift when compressed, properly sized struts will not do this
I believe Heize-Warren which is a German company that makes high quality stainless units has a website for sizing based on weight and travel. They are so well made they are pressure adjustable, and they will recharge them for free for the lifetime of the strut. And they are not cheap!
