Headlights turn off (flicker), otherwise fine

This past Monday evening, as I was driving home, I hopped on the freeway and within a minute noticed that my headlights turned themselves off. The car was otherwise running fine, and no other systems appeared to be affected -- dash lights, running lights, radio, etc. were all good -- just the headlights. I moved the turn signal stalk as if to turn on the brights (in case the low beams had failed concurrently.... errr whatever) and the lights came back on, but still on the low beams. Drove another mile and it happened again. I flicked the turn signal stalk, drove with the high beams for a second or two, and they flickered again -- but between the high and low beans, not off. Very strange. After that, they were fine for the rest of the drive home (about 15 minutes).
In case it matters, earlier in the week my wife reported that she *thought* the headlights were on when she got back to the car after parking for a bit. I just figured it was the result of a bright, sunny day, but now I'm wondering if there's a correlation.
Thoughts? I've heard mention of checking the headlight relay, but what would I check for? Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Yip
