For someone who knows what they are doing, with 2 identical cars where the drivetrain REALLY CAN be dropped in with no modification whatsoever (not a 1986 motor into a 1993 car, for example) and everything going perfectly according to plan, picking one engine and simply dropping it into a donor car can be done in probably 4 hours. If things don't go quite so smoothly (rusted hose clamps, stripped torx screw heads, broken motor mounts, stuck shifter coupler tapered pin.....the list goes on and on), I'd up it to an 8-hour job.
It really is quite simple; the entire wiring harness and A/C system flop out of the way onto the inner fender area, the battery cables come with the motor assembly, the exhaust is 2 nuts and 2 bolts underneath that hold the downpipe to the tranny. You basically jack up the front, pull the upper ball joint bolts, and pull the CV shafts out of the inner drivers. The motor mounts are easily accessable, and come apart with ease. The transmission (5-speed?) shift linkage and speedometer cable need to be disconnected, as well as the clutch line feeding the slave cylinder. The power steering line by the passengers motor mount needs to come undone, and as the motor is coming out, unhook the last power steering line from the bottom of the pump; its easier with it in the air. Aside from that, the hood comes off by removing 2 bolts and a windshield washer line. The rest is simply draining the fluids.
Dropping it back in is just the reverse. Hook power steering up with the motor suspended, drop it down on the motor mounts of the new car, and reconnect everything.
If its a general regular old run of the mill mechanic taking his time that has never dealt with a 900 before, I'd give them 2 days. A day for removal, and another day for reinstall.
Again.....this is simply a removal and install. No cleaning, no inspection, no nothing else. Just pick & place. Add time for anything else you'd want to check out.
