shops retain and recycle R12 so it is still around. as vern says, just not cheap. i also agree that R12 is cooler than Ra134. things to also check before you refill it however:
-make sure hose ends (where they go into crimp") are not loose and twistable. if they are you will lose the R12 thru there. there will often be a mist of oily dirt that has collected there.
-make sure the hose ends are tight on threads. seals can fail there, same oily dirt marks.
-if you clean the sight glass on the compressor, you should get an idicator of your refridgerent level by bubbles / no bubbles. assuming you still have R12 in the system. which i guess you do have some since you were blowing cool before.
-if the shop will evacuate the system and pull a vacuum on it for a while, if it does drop in vacuum you will know you have a leak somewhere in system. that way you won't be paying $$ to top up R12 just to lose it again.
