NTC controls how the ECU calibrates the mixture. For instance, when these go bad, the ECU thinks its 40 degrees below zero and floods out the engine. With inadequate coolant, I'd think the opposite would be true - ECU thinks its 150 degrees outside and leans everything out, resulting in your son's symptoms of feeling like he's running out of gas and generally no power.
