Brake lights won't turn off! Lower heat duct removal??

I have an 85 900S which has developed this annoying glitch. The brake lights won't turn off. If you put reverse pressure on the brake, they will go off, but come back on as soon as pedal returns to normal placement. The return spring seems fine. So I consulted the Bentley manual on how to remove the lower heat duct so I can actually see the pedal assemblby. I took the two screws off in the corners but it seems to still be attached in the middle. Is the bolt above the ashtray holding the ductwork in place? Bentley refers to this bolt but under the dash removal process. What size is it if you have to remove it? If I do get the duct off what do I look for? Thanks as always!
