i would just replace the tank. I did my 78 99ems recently, here's what i learned:
i think that year has a plastic tank (1979 or 80 and up if i remember)...which is a lot better that the metal one. If you do have a metal tank, don't worry, you can convert it to a plastic one easily.
Getting the tank off and on is really not very hard, and finding one should be possible, if it is indeed the one i'm thinkin it is.
The older style metal tank was on pre-79 cars w/ a full size spare tire in the trunk and it is yellow colored, The newer style tank is a bit larger, and fits on cars w/ the smaller (donut) spare tire and it is black colored. A black plastic tank was also on cars w/ a full size spare tire from 79 or 80 up to i think 81 or 2, then the spare tire thing changed, as did the tank.
There may be a difference from year to year, and body style may also be a factor(hatch or trunk).
I've seen em on ebay, and SAAB shops tend to have them around. I got mine from East of Sweden in CO. If you end up needing parts to convert the fuel pump seal or whatever else, let me know. I can probably dig em up!
