yeah, they always seem to rust from the innermost part above the cat outwards, so (unless it's really bad) you can't see anything's wrong until you drop the exhaust or poke around... I made the mistake once of ordering an exhaust to put on before dropping the old one + discovered the gaping hole in the heatshield (so then I put in order #2 ;-)... salt in winter + temperature extremes deteriorates them pretty quickly...
if you're in a rush + the old heatshield is mostly ok, a trick my indy used was to screw the new heatshield to the old one, at least up front where there is that hard to get to screw under the front console... saves a ton of labour cost!
I'm anal, so I did it the right way, but it's a good bit of work... some here weld a nut in so future replacements are easier... I've got no welding experience or equipment, so I didn't...
Another caution if you need a new cat: we went aftermarket (Bosal iirc) + I was unable to get it to align perfectly with the (new) Starla exhaust in such a way that it wouldn't rattle against the heat shield... I got an alignment that only seems to rattle in reverse when cold + am living with that, but the shape of the new cat is different than the original... also note the aftermarket cats usually have a built in heatshield... omitting the Saab heat shield would avoid the rattle I wasn't sure I trusted the puny shield on the cat, noting that the saab one covers more than the cat...
good luck!
James...
