Tire blew out -- grinding/vibration noise related?

For about 2 weeks, there's been a vibration at high speeds on my '90. Also, a rather grinding sound which seemed to correlate with the wheels moving (faster at high speeds, slower at slow speeds, not affected by putting the car in neutral).
I thought it might have been a sticking brake, or perhaps a wheel bearing. The sound wasn't a squeak. The grinding, for lack of a better word, wasn't all that loud, but it was audible. The vibrations were pretty sizeable at high speeds especially.
Anyway, today the vibration worsened and my tire (passenger side front) blew out. There wasn't a whole lot left of the tire at all.
I was wondering what the causes of this could be. (I just had the tires checked, and out of all four tires, that one had the most tread left - 6/32 compared to 4/32 for the other three). Could a seized up bearing do that?
After I put the spare on, I still could hear the grinding sound, not as loud but it was still there. So I guess that would exclude a faulty tire.
