I have been trying to troubleshoot an annoying issue in my 1990 900 turbo convertible. When I am under way on an open-road trip of more than 15 miles or so at speeds above 55mph, the car develops a metallic high pitched screeching / squealing noise. It sounds sort of like brake wear indicators screeching, or my wife described it like fingernails on a chalkboard.
It also has the characteristics of brake wear indicators because the noise will go away if the main brakes are applied, or if I apply the handbrake. If I stop, like at a traffic signal or something, the noise will go away for about a mile or so before starting back up.
I have replaced everything in the back of the car concerning the brakes. The calipers, rotors, and the pads. Prior to performing all this work, I noticed uneven wear on the driver side brake pads, and both sides were wearing quickly. Since replacing all the components however appear to be wearing evenly, and at a normal rate.
Now, I am thinking this might be wheel bearings, and wanted other opinions on that thought. Would worn wheel bearings make this type of noise? The reason why I think it's wheel bearings is if I drive through a left-hand curve, the noise stops on the left side of the car, and if I drive through a right-hand curve...vice versa. When the vehicle is traveling in a straight line, the noise is on both sides with no lateral loads on the wheel bearings. My speculation is if the wheel bearings are loose, the rotors could be slopping around in the calipers, causing the brake pads to wear quickly, and possibly causing the noise, but when either the bearing is loaded up, or the brake is applied, the sloppiness goes away, and so does the noise. Based on what others describe here as bearing noise however, doesn't coincide with the noise & symptoms I am experiencing, so that's why I am questioning this hypothesis.
