C myles, thanks for the reply indeed. I wonder if I ask another:
I actually rebuilt a few of these units myself, and purchased some of the tools, except that expensive pinion depth measuring jig, and the dial indicator. Years ago, I was told to just set up the pinion bearings and tighten the pinion nut until you could barely turn the pinion shaft-and reused the old shims. The result varied over the boxes that I have done.
There was one box, that whined like a siren, and eventually went away. Another box felt perfect, yet a few years after, grinding from 2nd to 3rd if one shifted to quickly- however if one shifted with a slight pause, no grinding. Since I replaced all of the synchros, and the forks were good_ could this be because of the pinion backlash that I never measured?
I plan on doing a rebuild soon_ any suggestions about the jig/ dial indicator?
Sources on a particular dial indicator or jig that can be substituted for the C900, if it is as all necessary?
Much appreciation, C myles
