Slyde has the right idea, pull all the covers off and see what you can see. Shift through the gears while spinning the clutch shaft. Unfortunately the only way to know for sure whether the unit has bad bearings or other serious problems is to drive the car or take the unit all apart and inspect everything (unless you have a tranny dynomometer).
