Trolling for rare parts Posted by Notnoel [Email] (#23) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Notnoel) on Thu, 1 Sep 2011 11:00:06 In Reply to: Cool! That is a bit much though..., darcey, Thu, 1 Sep 2011 10:43:58 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I have a short list of rare and no longer available parts (aka unobtanium), like NOS heater valves, PVC breather hoses, rear decor trim, rear "SPG" bumper extensions from an SE vert, etc. I'd recommend to anyone that's really devoted to these cars to set up a dedicated search in Fleabay (that excludesitems like car covers, seta covers, light bulds, brake pads, and other parts that sellers like to do a 100 postings of at a time.
Then check the ending soonest and newly listed categories once or twice a day as a habit - I do it at work as a brief distraction during my morning coffee and near the end of the day. once you start doing it, it only rakes about 30seconds to a minute each time to see what's new. You not only get a great feel for what the market price and general availability of a wide variety of parts is like, but can often swoop in and get a bargain when the seller doesn't realize the true value of a part and mis-prices it with a buy-it-now feature.
I know it's a little OCD, but day before yesterday, I did finally score the rear bumper extensions I have been looking for for years, so it does work. You can't really search just by the item name very effectively, because the descriptions are often fairly random. For instance, I got the bumper extensions based on the photograph - he was selling the turn signal lights and I noticed that it was an SE (a rare car), contacted him about the panels, and bought them off-line.
it'd sorta part of the hobby/sickness aspect of owning these classics.
