My ring and pinion went out going into second hard, crossing a major highway on my way to work in Maryville. However, I didn't immediately realize I had done it, since the noise initially sounded like a rock stuck in a tire or something, just a slight tick/tick noise. When I went to drive home, as soon as I was up to 30-ish mph, it sounded like a tractor dragging a sledge through gravel. The mechanic who inspected it said he had seen others go out from getting on and off the throttle while in gear, so if your car had a violent stumble, perhaps the back and forth smack of the engine may have been enough to see off a weak gear.
Mine didn't crack the transmission housing though, so it may not be your only problem...
