I also have a 1989 with a 2.0L engine. I prefer the 2.0L (that car has been rock solid) but the 2.1L has more power.
Anyway, our 2.1L has been apart twice since we bought it and possibly once before (since our indy commented "it's not a SAAB hg!" the first time he opened it up)... hg finally went + lost compression after a year of undiagnosed slow coolant loss (Ie nobody could diagnose it - we tried!)... second time it was a burnt valve... all that while <100k miles old (owned from 45k miles)!
There was significant block pitting from the green $h!t + our indy brazed + leveled the block as per Townsend + had the head remachined... the block was fine the second time... that car (both actually) now has the 82 degree tstat + fanswitch and merc coolant... no significant problems since that I am aware of.
My advice: make sure it's got 82 degree tstat + fan switch, merc coolant (+ change regularly) + keep an eye out for coolant level dropping. Other than that drive it. If the hg fails, check over the block carefully + braise if necessary. If it runs well, I wouldn't open it up preemptively if you have no symptoms... If it's got to 150k miles, the PO probably fixed the original hg soon enough... cars that got in promptly for the 25k service (when the crap gaskets from the factory were replaced as a recall iirc?) should be better than those that were late (eg driven less)...
