Karl -- I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble. I'm not sure what's going on. The pentapus I made when I had a bad switch some years ago worked fine for me, but I only used it a handful of times. I hope it's not the source of the trouble!

While starting the car, you might try disconnecting the grey/white wire (54) while you're operating the starter, then, when the engine fires, re-connect the wire. Bentley shows the 54 circuit as open when in the Start position, and closed only when in the Run position. I have yet to deal with an ignition relay issue, so don't have a definite solution, but I'm wondering if the problem is somehow related to 54.

I would check your fuses, too, just to be sure you didn't blow something.

Finally, the order in which I previously wrote to connect the wires on the pentapus is the same order as the ignition switch closes the associated circuits (based on a Bentley diagram, pg. 371-7). I wonder if you might be closing them out of order, and this is causing a problem.
