Front "round" mount AOK, pulled the starter for refund Posted by DET17 [Email] (#1254) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DET17) on Tue, 18 Oct 2011 20:02:33 In Reply to: Re: 91T auto - clunking noises at shifts, reverse UP hill, DET17 [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 10 Oct 2011 15:25:18 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
As suggested by Derf and others, jacked up the autobox and removed the front mount. Basically at 90% of new condition, minor tear but no lost motion/broken steel sleeve out of the center rubber. Not the issue.
I'm wondering now if my dead starter could be the cause of all the noises....when backing uphill (nose down hill) I am suspicious that the mechanism is drifting downhill and bouncing off the flex plate? I know the starter is toasted...when the key is actuated you can hear the starter spin, but the Bendix mechanism does not kick the spur gear out into the flex plate. I'll be taking the starter back to NAPA tomorrow for a replacement, and I'll inspect the key switch for the "sticking" phenomena which I'm being told could have fried it.
The only odd event remaining is why does the car in forward gears under full throttle seem to grind? Hard to imagine how the starter could drift out on level ground?
We shall see....new replacement starter, reassemble and test. If the noises remain, she goes on ice until the 5 speed swap is arranged.
