I pulled one once at the junkyard, and I kind of remember that there's a little scallop cutout in the top edge of the sheet metal hole, and that if you spin the thing around about 180 degrees the tiny projecting spigot will just slip out thru that space. Otherwise it didn't seem to want to come and you'd be tempted to snap off that little piece, which you hadn't ought to do.
