My son's 1989 c900 has been driving like crap. A couple weeks ago I went to his school and replaced his failed harmonic balancer. That solved that issue, but the car still ran like crap. It had the typical idle issues, and was stalling, and was hard to restart sometimes, yada, yada... Ran through all the usual suspects to solve the problem--connection at hall effect, vac leaks, AIC valve, etc. The only way he could get the car to run right was to unplug the AIC valve and leave it unplugged. Then it idled perfectly, and the check engine light went off. That's not supposed to happen, so I knew something else was amiss. He drove it all the way home that way though. I looked at it a bit yesterday and did a bunch of the usual diagnostics and troubleshooting and nothing--more head scratching. Finally called my Saab indie friend Paul. Ironically, Paul was having the same issue with a car he was working on. After a couple days of continuous work--including replacing the entire wiring harness--he narrowed it down to the aftermarket distributor cap and rotor. He put on an OEM Bosch and BINGO--problem solved. My son had just replaced his cap and rotor this summer when he gave the car a tuneup. I knew his cap and rotor weren't OEM Bosch. With Paul's advice, I went to my used parts bin, grabbed an old Bosch cap and rotor off a distributor, cleaned the contacts and put it on the car--BINGO. The car started right up, idled perfectly, check engine light went off. I unplugged the AIC and the idle rose as it's supposed to. Glad that someone else went through the hassle to figure this out to save me some frustration. I'm sure I never would have figured it out since the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires were new and it was acting like a vacuum leak or AIC valve issue. Thought I'd pass it along in case anyone else is having the same issue--worth a shot. Bosch distributor cap and rotor only from now on.
