transmission oil Posted by Cmyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Cmyles) on Fri, 16 Dec 2011 14:27:46 In Reply to: it's not a tune-up, it's a maintenance, Siegfried, Fri, 16 Dec 2011 10:56:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Assuming that you have a five speed manual and not the automatic transmission you want to be sure that it's full of 10w30 engine oil. Some people put heavy (90w) gear oil in them (good luck shifting when it gets cold) but 10w30 or one of the expensive alternatives (Redline MTL, Amsoil, etc.) is what you'll do best with in Chicago. People destroy these gearboxes by draining them and failing to properly refill them and fixing the gearbox is one of the most expensive repairs you can have to do so take your time and do it right. If you have the automatic transmission you put 10w30 or gear oil in the differential component and type F atf in the transmission component. Check them both, even if the atf is all topped up the differential can have leaked all it's oil out and the gears will soon be destroyed. There are three drain plugs on the automatic trans; a giant slotted screw for the atf, a big bolt for the engine oil and a big plug at the back for the differential oil.
