unless you often overloaded your alternator or you did any soldering on your car with ground clamp hooked onto the engine then the VR itself should be fine. Usually it's the brushes that are worn out. But when changing VR (or VR-set since that unit goes as VR plus brushes) people tend to forget about those copper rings on the alt rotor which work with VR brushes - to my experience those rings usually last for 2-3 VR-sets. So if you're changing your VR the second time then it's a good idea to replace rotor copper rings as well (or just take your alt to alternator-starter shop).
Modern alternators are designed to provide about 30-65K of lifetime for the brushes depending on the alternator load (some like it loud or run 100500W driving lights and this costs less lifetime for alternator brushes; others can go with corner lights only for night driving)
