If you can do the dist. swap, you can do a crank trigger. If you (or your mechanic) use the generic crank trigger instead of the OEM trigger the cost should not be too bad. If the mechanic is going to do the work either way then the cost is likely to be similar. At that point you might as well "do it right".
As to cost/"value of car" its something a lot of face often. A good running 1990 is worth $800 and you surely can not find a decent car for $800 so I would spend the money and hopefully be good for another year.
