and since I had to remove my interior, I'm replacing all OEM mats with sound insulating sludge, rubber barriers and new mats.
The mats that are in the car soak up vast amounts of water. (steering fluid too) OEM mats are open foam with a solid rubber backing sound barrier, 1/4 inch thick +-.
The three layers that are replacing it is 3/8- inch. Noise suppression is over 4db. Measured with an app so it may not be accurate but the values differences should be valid.

OEM 76db at 70mph.
73db-now at 70mph
82db with nothing.
Lining the trunk and hatch help greatly. I would not use the asphalt stuff, it can be bad in the summer but it is cheap. The weight of these products is 33 lb. over the stuff that came out. The new mats don't absorb water. The materials were not cheap but the livability of the car is improved. The stereo doesn't have to be blaring. My thoughts aren't nearly as bad when I can't hear everything wrong with my car. If you're not going to take out the interior, work on the trunk. Hatchbacks can really be quitted if you spend some time in your trunk. Take that any way you like.
