I use a plumbers insulation foam strip, 1 1/2" wide grey with glue strip on one side when doing the 9000 heatercore. Haven't had to replace a C900 heatercore yet.
The space between firewall and heatervalve though might need something softer and more forgiving since it is not a perfectly flat area. You don't want to pack too much insulation between since you will be fighting forever to get the bolts in to heatervalve.
But then again, if you install the heatercore and valve already screwed together, you have it a little bit easier.
When using the new Saab genuine foam cushion, I know it is quite tough to get the 4 screws in when working under the dashboard.
