I'm probably in-between... I bring along a compact but complete toolkit + a few "at risk" parts + a few easy small things that are good to have on hand (plugs, belt, fluids etc). In winter, a full sized winter wheel (vs the donut)...
I think it really depends what kind of problem you anticipate being able to deal with on the road + what will actually leave you stranded. A major engine or tranny problem will leave you stranded, but are you really going to overhaul/swap something like that at the side of the road? So probably no sense bringing parts for that... Things like a battery or plugs or cap + rotor are sold everywhere (even if you need to buy a non-bosch to get you from a to b to get a bosch set), so while inconvenient to have to do that, it shouldn't leave you stranded (at least for long) unless driving through really remote areas... Something like a radiator, it's big, not too expensive, not too hard to get or replace, but there's probably some signs of failure happening before you leave, you know how old it is etc, so do it before you leave...
I agree, it's good to be prepared. I'll admit that with kids, I don't do many long trips in the c900s anymore. I burnt a valve once, and fortunately I was near my destination + could then take the time to get the right parts + get it fixed properly... we use the 9-5 for long trips, but that experience has made me pack a few extra higher risk small parts for it in around the spare. It's a newish used car with limited history, so still some unknowns (only way to avoid the "unknown" is to immediately replace all kinds of stuff which may not need it - pretty spendy imho)... Never hurts to be cautious!
James...
