In comparing both cars....I believe that Saab really hit a homerun with the homegrown version based off the 2 door notchback, versus the ASC-built version based off the hatchback.

Aside from appearance, if I were a betting man, I'd wager that a major reason the notchback was chosen as the platform had to deal with what it would have taken to "firm" up the body of a hatchback. On the notchback, behind the rear seat is a solid chunk of steel that runs from side to side of the car, making the trunk, rear seat mounting area, etc. A hatchback is wide open (one thing we LOVE about the hatches!). To firm up the hatch body, reinforcement would have certainly needed to be added to that back area.

Having never seen behind the rear seat in a notchback....I'd bet that its strikingly similar to to the substructure that the 'verts ultimately were produced with.
